Sunderbans is one of the most remarkable natural phenomena in South Asia and the world’s largest halophytic mangrove forest. Covering an area of almost 10,000 square kilometers in India and Bangladesh, Sunderbans is created by the meeting of the Ganga and Brahmaputra rivers in the Bengal basin. This enormous delta has earned worldwide recognition for being the home of the magnificent Royal Bengal Tiger. Situated in West Bengal, Sundarbans National Park was designated as a wildlife sanctuary in 1977 and declared a national park on 4 May 1984. . The park occupies about 1,355 sq. km of the land area and is named after the abundant presence of Sundari trees in the park.

Flora:
Mangroves dominate the park’s forest, characterized by special f Over 80 species are present here, including Rhizophora, Avicennia, and Bruguiera. One particular plant in this region is the Sundari Tree, named after which the forest has been named; its population has dwindled owing to less water inflow. Mangroves in the area offer protection against cyclones and provide locals with their livelihood.

Fauna:
With more than 1,500 species calling this place home, the highlight of Sundarbans National Park is the Royal Bengal Tiger. Apart from this animal, other fauna in the park include deer, otters, fishing cats, dolphins, and even the Estuarine Crocodile. It hosts over 200 bird species and aquatic species such as hilsa, crabs, and prawns.

Sundarbans is accessible mainly through river waterways, with multiple entry points depending on the forest division you plan to visit.

Entry Points

Sundarban Tiger Reserve (STR): Sonakhali (via Canning) and Bagna (via Dhamakhali).

South 24 Parganas Forest Division (west of River Matla): Namkhana, Raidighi, and Jharkhali (via Canning/Basanti).

Entry permits are available at Canning, Sonakhali, and Bagna for STR, and at Canning, Namkhana, and Raidighi for the western forest area.

By Air – The nearest airport is Dum Dum Airport (Kolkata), about 166 km away.

By Rail – Canning is the nearest railway station (approx. 48 km). Gosaba is the nearest town, around 50 km away.

By Road – From Kolkata, you can take a suburban train to Canning or travel by road to Gosaba or Jharkhali.

The ideal time to visit is from September to May.
