History Of Sundarban National Park

The Sundarbans, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the world’s largest mangrove forest, shared by India and Bangladesh. Human presence in the region dates back nearly 3,000 years, with major ecological changes occurring during the British era due to large-scale deforestation and land clearing. By the late 20th century, both countries recognized its ecological value and declared it a protected area.

The forest is also home to indigenous communities who depend on fishing, honey collection, and small-scale farming for their livelihood.

In the early 1900s, Daniel Mackinnon Hamilton played a key role in transforming parts of the Sundarbans—especially Gosaba—through land reclamation, embankment building, and the promotion of cooperative farming. His efforts helped turn the once undeveloped region into a productive and sustainable community, setting the foundation for future development in the Sundarbans.
