Sundarban Honey Collection: A Tradition of Courage and Nature
Sundarban honey is one of the most unique natural products of the Sundarbans mangrove forest, the world’s largest mangrove ecosystem. Collected by traditional honey gatherers known as Moulis, this wild honey comes from nectar gathered by giant honeybees (Apis dorsata) from mangrove flowers such as Khalisha, Gewa, and Keora.
Every year between March and June, licensed honey collectors enter the tiger-inhabited forests after seeking blessings from Bonbibi, the revered forest deity. Using traditional techniques, they harvest honey from wild beehives while facing risks from Royal Bengal Tigers, crocodiles, snakes, and challenging tidal conditions.
Pure Sundarban honey is prized for its rich golden color, thick texture, earthy flavor, and natural health benefits. It contains antioxidants, antibacterial properties, and essential minerals, making it a popular natural sweetener and immunity booster.
Today, sustainable initiatives by WWF India and the Forest Department help local communities produce and market authentic mangrove honey under recognized brands, improving livelihoods while reducing risks to collectors.
Buying genuine Sundarban honey supports local families, preserves traditional knowledge, and contributes to the conservation of the unique Sundarbans ecosystem.
