Chintamani Kar Bird Sanctuary, located at Narendrapur near Kolkata, bird watching in Kolkata was originally a vast private mango orchard with century-old trees, surrounded by water bodies and wasteland. Spread over 27 acres earlier, it was reduced to 17 acres when acquired by the Government of West Bengal in 2005. Earlier known as Narendrapur Wildlife Sanctuary (2004), it was renamed in 2005 to honor renowned artist Chintamani Kar, who, along with locals and NGOs, fought to protect the area as a sanctuary. The best time to visit Chintamani Kar bird sanctuary is November to February, when migratory birds arrive. The sanctuary is open 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with early mornings ideal for birdwatching and photography for Kolkata nature trails.
